Shutter Island

For some reason or another, my wife and I missed this movie when it was out at the cinemas. We saw it advertised, but just never got around to seeing it – damn!

Shutter Island is such a cool movie, start to finish it was non-stop suspense. Never for one minute are you 100% sure what’s going on and it’s always edge-of-your-seat stuff. I think seeing it on Blu-Ray only added to the experience.

Scorsese and Di Caprio are proving to be a dynamic combination. Definitely worth checking out – 4.5/5.

Zombieland….. good clean fun!

Ha! Of course when I say “clean” I mean blood, guts and gore… but it’s comedy, not horror and we all need to laugh a little more these days.

I was lucky enough to catch a sneak preview on Monday night with my brother down at the Jam Factory. I went in without too many expectations…. a “Zombie killing comedy”…. no academy award nominations were likely. However, I was surprised by this movie. A good mix of “in your face” and subtle humour. Woody Harrelson’s line “that’ll do pig” is still playing out in my mind 2 days later. If you’re a fan of “Shaun of the Dead”, or similar comedies, go and check it out.

Woody H plays his part well, as does Jessie Eisenberg (The Hunting Party / The Village). All up, a good young cast held together well by Woody and a very cool cameo by Bill Murray.

Not in the league of the awesome comedies of late, such as “The Hangover”….. however a few laughs, just don’t take it too seriously, sit back, relax and enjoy.

Watchmen – The Review

Firstly, this movie is long, make sure you have a good snack and beverage supply. 163 minutes of action.

So not having ever seen the Watchmen comics, I went into the movie with an idea in my head that this was going to be like X-Men. This is for the most part, not that case.

The movie is set in a slightly altered “could have been” 1980′s, with the world on the edge of Nuclear War. Masked superheroes are practically classed as vigilantes and have definitely fallen from grace in the eyes on the public and law enforcement.

This movie dives deep into the background stories of all of the main players. It really helps to build the characters. There is excessive gore in some parts, but it’s great for shock value. Also, the use of “cringe-worthy” awkward comedy is very good. However, there is a little too much CGI penis for my liking.

The sound track is bloody awesome. Sometimes you get too much into the music and you actually can lose focus on what’s going on.

Make sure you clean your ears before seeing the film though, there are a few scenes with very quick talking and you might miss a piece of info that will leave you with a few unanswered questions afterwards.

Ok, so my final rating.

Movie 7/10 + 1.5 for the sound track – 0.5 for excessive CGI penis || 8/10 overall.

IMO there are some flaws that need discussing, but I don’t want to spoil anything. All and all – a very good movie and definitely should be up there on your “to view” list.
